How strong of a material do I need?
Would Melamine work?
Melamine is a product we stock at Midtown Lumber that is made out of compressed wood products. It is also known as White Composite Board and is made out of compressed chips of wood with a white melamine coating on either side. Sheets of the material come in the dimensions 4’ x 8’ (48” x 96”) and ¾” thick.
Melamine is commonly used as shelves in bookcases but plywood would be a stronger alternative if there is a need for stronger support. While Melamine can be screwed together, it also needs to be glued and braced so it does not loosen. It is also not considered to be paintable or stainable.
